A group of north-east children have pirouetted their way into a critically-acclaimed ballet show.

Last week the Scottish Ballet brought their production of Hansel and Gretel to HM Theatre in Aberdeen.

And the professionals were joined on the stage by four local children, Maddison Gemmell, Erin Moir, Libby Buirds and Scott Milne.

The budding young dancers play school children in the performance, which had its final show in the Granite City on Saturday.

The company had invited children from each city on their Scottish tour to take part, with many of the volunteers having no previous experience in dance.

The updated version of the classic Grimm Brother’s fairytale began on Wednesday.

It is set to a score performed live by the Scottish Ballet orchestra, and takes place in a small town where all the children have disappeared.

The production’s next stop is at the Eden Court Theatre in Inverness for a three night run, from Wednesday to Saturday.

Scottish Ballet Artistic Co-ordinator Maria Jimenez said: “Some of the children who perform on stage with our professional dancers are Scottish Ballet associates and receive classically based ballet training from the company, but we were also keen to get children from local schools involved in Hansel and Gretel too.

“They all picked up the steps very quickly and did brilliantly at every rehearsal session.”
