Organisers of one of the north-east’s premier agricultural shows are putting the finishing touches to the event before the gates open next weekend.

Thousands of visitors are expected to travel to the New Deer Show to see displays of prize livestock and enjoy a range of family events.

The show, now in its 170th year, is one of the largest of its kind in country and boasts one of the best known horse events in the area.

But alongside its traditional fair of attractions, this year promises a selection of new and returning trade stands, vintage vehicles and children’s activities.

President Drew Elphinstone said planning was all but complete, and that the weekend now relied on some good weather to bring the crowds out in force.

Mr Elphinstone is the third generation of his family to have been involved in presiding over the show.

He said: “Things are going well and entries in both our cattle and sheep categories are up.

“We’ve also sold out of tickets for our comedy show on the Friday night, so that’s been pleasing.

“This year we’ll also have more trade stands which is good considering the current financial climate.

“Clydesdale horses will also be on show which might remind people of the old days and be something for younger people to enjoy, but we’re basically now just hoping for some good weather.”

Last year’s show had been attended by about 6,000 people.

But shows in the past, which have been blessed with sunny skies, have been known to draw as much as 10,000 visitors to the area.

Mr Elphinstone added the continued success of the event was down to the committee behind it.

“The president is just a small part in it all,” he said.

“It’s the community pulling together that really makes it a success. We have a great committee and have a good team of both young and old people really driving it on.”

The 2017 New Deer Show will be held on July 15 and 16 at Craigieford Park near the village. The annual marquee dance will be held the Saturday night.
