A90 to close for three days meaning traffic will be diverted through Ellon

A busy section of a major road will be closed next weekend meaning traffic will be diverted through a north-east town.

The stretch of the A90 Aberdeen to Fraserburgh road between both Ellon roundabouts will be shut to allow resurfacing work worth £320,000 to be carried out.

The works, which are being carried out by Bear Scotland, will begin on Friday night and finish on Monday morning.

During the closures, motorists travelling in both directions will be diverted through Ellon.

Northbound drivers will be asked to along the South Road, Bridge Street and back out onto the A90 via the Ellon Bypass.

People travelling in the opposite direction will have to go along Castle Road, South Road before joining the A90 again.

Last night, Ellon and District councillor Richard Thomson urged motorists to use an alternative route if possible.

He said: “Closing a bypass route would cause significant disruption at any time, but if it has to happen, then it’s better it takes place over a summer weekend when traffic is lighter than during the working week.

“I’d urge drivers and residents to be patient while these necessary repairs are taking place, and for drivers who are only passing through to either follow the diversions or if possible to find an alternative main route which keeps well away from the area.”

Local residents have already been made aware of the closure, which Bear has said is vital to allow the condition of the road to be upgraded.

Consultation has taken place with residents and the local authority in advance of the resurfacing to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements and to minimise any inconvenience.

Andy Thompson, the organisation’s north east representative, said: “These works have been designed to improve the general condition and safety of this section of the A90 for motorists.

“The road closure is necessary to keep everyone safe during the improvements, however we’ve planned this scheme to take place over one full weekend to limit the overall impact to road users.

“Our teams will do all they can to minimise disruption and complete the works as quickly and safely as possible.

“We thank motorists for their patience while we complete these works and encourage road users to plan their journeys in advance by checking the Traffic Scotland website and allow some extra time to reach their destination.”

The closure begins on 7.30pm on Friday and opens again on Monday at 6.30am.
