North-east set for bumper fireworks extravaganzas

Fireworks will light up the skies across the north-east this weekend with a range of events planned across the region.

The fun will start today at Rosehearty when the community’s annual bonfire and fireworks displays will illuminate the tiny coastal village from 6.30pm.

Meanwhile, the village of St Combs will host its own celebrations from 7.30pm.

However, the largest pyrotechnic display is expected to take place on Sunday, with Peterhead’s Gadle Braes bonfire set to bask the entire town in its glow.

The massive event, complete with firework displays and music from the town’s local community radio station, kicks off at 6pm.

Organisers have issued a reminder to motorists that they will be unable to access the street during the duration of the bonfire to allow pedestrians access.

Burns Road will also be closed to everyone but residents to allow the fire service fast access to the scene.

On Sunday elsewhere, Buchanhaven Harbour will host its own bonfire and fireworks display from 7.30pm.

Fireworks displays will also launch into the skies from Maud and Cruden Bay, both at 6pm.

In an effort to help the weekend go as smoothly as possible for organisers and attendees alike, the fire service yesterday issued renewed safety advice for people venturing out.

It came following reports of missiles being launched at firefighters at similar events last year.

In one instance, an appliance was hit by a firework thrown from a crowd at an unofficial bonfire in Androssan.

Assistant chief officer, Lewis Ramsay, said: “This type of behaviour not only prevents our crew from bringing any emergency to a safe and swift conclusion, but it can impact on our emergency service colleagues.

“This cannot be condoned.”
