A north-east man stole £2,700 from his new employers – then gambled it away in a drunken frenzy.
Daniel Rubruck had been working at a Greggs bakery on Union Street for nine weeks and was responsible for cashing up at closing time and opening up in the morning.
One night after locking up, he visited the nearby Grovesnor Casino.
And thinking he would manage to pull off a few victories he returned to the shop and took the money from the safe before returning.
When he woke up the next day he realised he had lost it all.
His employers contacted the police who attended his address on Marischal Street.
When officers detained him he said: “I was just going to go to the police station to get it sorted.”
The 39-year-old confessed to the offence, which took place on June 27 last year, during an appearance at Aberdeen Sheriff Court last month.
He returned yesterday to be sentenced.
Fiscal depute Stuart Wright confirmed the money had not been recovered.
Representing him, defence agent Gail Goodfellow said his long-standing alcohol problems had returned to haunt him.
She said: “He was employed as a trainee supervisor at the premises and had been in employment for around nine weeks.
“He has a history of alcohol misuse going back to his mid teens.
“He explained to his employer that he was struggling, it is surprising that he continued to be given responsibility for the keys to the premises.”
Sheriff Graeme Buchanan opted to defer sentence on Rubruck to allow him to time to address his issues.
He said: “This involved a very substantial breach of trust.
“However in the light of all that has been explained to me I take the view that the best thing to do is to defer sentence for a period of six months for you to be of good behaviour and to sort out your alcohol problem.”
Rubruck will return to court in July.
