A north-east charity is preparing to move into its new home after being handed the keys for £1.

People First Fraserburgh works with people with learning disabilities and has been based in the port for 24 years.

The charity applied to take on the council’s former housing office in Mid Street after local authority staff moved out.

And the group’s bid was unanimously approved by members of the Banff and Buchan area committee last week.

Stewart Whyte, the charity’s facilitator, said it would it would give his team a permanent base after years of moving around.

He said: “It has been hard work and taken almost a year but it has finally come to fruition.

“We have had six different premises over the years so it is absolutely brilliant that we have finally got a home of our own.

“It will help us make plans for the future and everybody is absolutely delighted.”

Mr Whyte said Aberdeenshire Council was due thanks for its “enormous help”.

The charity’s new headquarters will now undergo a £35,000 upgrade, which includes a new kitchen, toilets, wider doorways, a ramp and flooring.

The work is being paid for by Grampian Housing and Robertson’s Construction ,who are building flats at People First’s old site at Cross Street.

Fraserburgh councillors Brian Topping, Charles Buchan and Doreen Mair have all backed the move.

Mr Topping said: “I know myself and my fellow Broch member, Councillor Buchan, have been supporting this group for many years.

“This gives them a new home and I know they will be very happy with it as it is more central.”

Mr Buchan said: “The group have worked very well with the council, going through this process.

“They have a long track record and have done extremely well providing services to the town.”

Ms Mair added: “I know some people who go to this facility and they have really come on since joining.”
