Judy Murray has welcomed a north-east council’s decision to back a £15million sports centre for Inverurie.

The successful coach, and mother of Sir Andy and Jamie, was reacting to Aberdeenshire Council’s Garioch area committee’s approval of the Garioch Sports Centre.

The major extension will massively overhaul the current site in the town and will include three tennis courts after Ms Murray was asked for her input in the design process.

She said: “We can (soon) discuss how my foundation can work with you to build a tennis workforce within the local community so there’s lots of tennis activity in schools and parks in advance of the centre’s opening.”

The proposals  also include a new home stadium for Highland League side Inverurie Locos FC.

The ground would be open for other teams to use and would have a similar surface to the one used by Kilmarnock FC players, so it could accommodate football and rugby.

There will also be a dedicated youth facility along with a bigger gym and a childcare centre.

Graeme Hay, director of the sports centre, added: “We’re delighted that Aberdeenshire Council have approved our planning application.

“This allows us to progress external funding applications straight away. Our ambitions remain the same and we’re committed to providing much needed sports and community facilities for Inverurie and beyond.

“The hard work really begins now.”
