Once the rubble has been cleared, a housing developer wants to build more than 120 properties on the site in the future.
The facility was closed a decade ago and replaced with the current fire house which sits next to it.
Sanctuary Homes bought the land from the fire service in November and subsequently submitted a proposal of application notice.
However, the city council’s planners ordered the developer to go back to the drawing board and carry out more consultation.
The firm hopes to put forward proposals for 121 homes for affordable rent.
It is expected to be for a mix of one, two and three bedroom homes, consisting of flats and houses.
The demolition work, which is being carried out by Dundee firm Safedem, was supposed to start earlier in the year but was delayed to allow a bat study to be carried out.
The training tower, where new recruits would have learned how to battle fires in a simulated high rise, was bulldozed at the beginning of the week.
The remainder of the work is expected to be finished by the end of next month.
Developers confirmed construction could begin on the homes next summer, subject to planning approval.
The fire station opened in the 1960s and was replaced by the new facility next door in 2008.
The site was previously earmarked for a retail development but proposals for a major Tesco superstore were squashed by councillors almost 20 years ago.
