A charity which supports bereaved parents is pushing ahead with plans for a memorial garden at a north-east cemetery.

Banff and Buchan Sands has already made progress with the project in Peterhead’s Balmoor Cemetery with the installation of a granite bench.

The final touches will include planting the Eloise Sands Rose, a hybrid flower created to raise funds for the charity, and toadstools with the names of the children who have died.

The idea to set up a memorial garden in Peterhead came from Karen Brown, whose daughter Sinead McKenzie has lost three babies.

Miss McKenzie said she hopes the memorial can help others who have lost a child.

She said: “Every baby should be remembered.

“I’ve been lucky because I have a burial place for mine, but not everyone has got that.

“Before I lost mine I had never heard about a lot of people losing babies because they don’t talk about it.

“I’m quite open about it and hope other folk with talk about it as it helps me with my grief.”

A Sands memorial garden is already open at both Aden Park in Mintlaw and Turriff Cemetery, but hopes are high the next one can be built in Fraserburgh.

Beth Buchan, from the Banff and Buchan Sands group, said the memorial gardens can be used by grieving families who do not have their own grave to visit.

She said: “It is for the people who don’t have a memorial themselves.

“Baby loss is such an emotive subject as nobody is expecting to lose their child.

“Nowadays there is a lot more help out there for people. This memorial garden is for folk to sit in and reflect.”

Peterhead North and Rattray councillor Dianne Beagrie said she is happy to be helping the project.

She said: “(Sands) contacted me and I am delighted to be involved.  It is something that is needed in Peterhead.

“We’ll be coordinating with Sands to open it officially.”
