Three Aberdeen men battered victim on night out in city

Three Aberdeen men have admitted yesterday admitted viciously assaulting another man after a night out in the city centre.

Liam McCaig, Kenneth Sandison and Liam Smith set upon Aaron Baker on Justice Mill Lane at 1.15am on Saturday June 30.

The trio appeared together in the dock at Aberdeen Sheriff Court to admit assaulting Mr Baker by “repeatedly punching him on the head to his injury”.

Smith, of Beechwood Court, and 22-year-old McCaig, of Lossie Place, accepted a further charge of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner by “struggling and fighting” with the complainer’s friend, Lei Runcie.

Fiscal Gavin Letford, said Mr Baker had been walking between The Foundry and Cafe Bardot when the three accused caught his attention.

He said that McCaig and Smith were the only two who knew the complainer, but that 52-year-old Sandison, of Clifton Road, struck the first blow.

Mr Letford said: “When Mr Baker turned around, Mr Sandison headbutted him and all three accused then began punching him to the face and head.”

The court heard the victim suffered cuts to the back of his head and a swollen right temple, while Mr Runcie ended up with “a suspected broken nose”.

Police were alerted after the fracas was captured on CCTV and later arrested the three men on Albyn Place.

Lawyers for the accused insisted that there was an element of provocation involved in the scuffle.

Sheriff Phillip Mann ordered McCaig to perform 160 hours of unpaid work, Sandison 120 hours and 26-year-old Smith 125 hours.
