Improvement work on a north-east secondary school will begin next month.

The council has been searching for a company to take on the upgrade to the roof and drainage systems at Peterhead Academy.

In May, it was revealed the urgent repairs were required to keep the school open and members of the Buchan area committee discussed the maintenance programme in private.

Now Aberdeenshire Council has appointed a company to take on the project at the Prince Street secondary.

It comes as efforts to deliver a £71 million replacement for the current building continues.  The funding for the project will be available in the next financial year.

The latest maintenance contract is worth more than £200,000 and comes just months after the local authority was criticised for spending money on the building.

Peterhead North and Rattray councillor Alan Buchan hit out at the council for not pushing ahead with the community campus sooner.

He has previously called on Aberdeenshire Provost Bill Howatson to resign over the bid to build a new school and has renewed that demand.

Mr Buchan believes there will not be any progress on the new campus project for more than a decade.

He said: “Aberdeenshire Council has gone to great lengths to mislead the public in the Peterhead area regarding the new Peterhead Academy community campus.

“This announcement of substantial repair works to the current academy buildings is further evidence that we will not see a new academy for at least 10 to 12 years.

“I am once again calling for the resignation of the provost who has used his position of so called neutrality to block my motions and questions.”

A council spokesman said a contractor had been appointed for the project and work will begin next month.

He said: “Prime Build Solutions has been awarded the contract for essential maintenance works at Peterhead Academy.

“The work is due to start in January for a period of 12 weeks.”
