Woman rushed to hospital after being hit by car on Aberdeen street

A pensioner was taken to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car on an Aberdeen road early yesterday morning.

The 68-year-old woman was crossing the road at Tillydrone Avenue, near Aberdeen University’s zoology building, when she was struck by a dark blue Vauxhall Zafira at around 6.15am.

An ambulance took her to hospital and police have described her injuries as “serious”.

The through-road was closed by police with a cordon put up and motorists diverted at around 6.30am.

Crash investigators spent the morning at the scene where the car could be seen with its windscreen smashed. A dark jacket also lay on the road.

The route was eventually reopened to traffic just after 1pm after much disruption to local traffic.

Last night, police appealed for any witnesses to the collision or anyone who had seen the woman earlier in the day to come forward.

Sergeant Stuart Lawrence, from the north- east road policing unit, said: “Inquiries into the circumstances of the collision are at an early stage, and I am appealing to anyone who witnessed it or saw the blue Vauxhall Zafira or female pedestrian prior to the incident to contact us.

“I would also appeal to anyone who may have stopped at the scene, and who has not yet passed their details to police, to contact us.

“I would ask anyone who has any other information, including any dashcam footage that was taken in the area from around this time, to contact Police Scotland on 101 using reference number 0755 of 27 December.”

Tillydrone, Seaton and Old Aberdeen councillor Ross Grant, lives on the street and said that, even given the Christmas holidays, the usually busy road had been “surprisingly quiet”.

He added: “The incident is of a serious nature and I hope that the woman’s injuries are not life threatening.

“I am sending my thoughts and warmest wishes to her and her loved ones. There generally isn’t a high volume of traffic on the road at that time of the day during the festive holidays, so it is a concern for residents living on the road to hear this news.”
