Search efforts for missing Alastair Done to be scaled back

Police have been searching for Alastair Done at Balmedie Beach.
Police have been searching for Alastair Done at Balmedie Beach.

Searches for a missing dog walker at a north-east beach are to be scaled back.

Alastair Done was captured on CCTV in a Balmedie shop.

Alastair Done was last seen at Balmedie Beach two weeks ago and extensive inquiries have been carried out into his disappearance since then.

But while several members of the public have reported seeing the 25-year-old since, police have been unable to find him or any of his belongings.

Mr Done travelled to Aberdeen from Crewe Train Station on Friday, January 4.

He stayed at the White Horse Inn in Balmedie that evening, and was seen at the Premier Stores there the following morning buying food and drink.

Over the last two weeks officers have used divers and dog units to search the dunes and difficult terrain but to no avail.

Police are now preparing to scale back their efforts.

Detective Inspector Sam Buchan said: “To maximise the use of our resources in any missing person inquiry we focus our searches led by the information available to us.

“In this case, our inquiries have led Alastair to the beach and we have no information at this time to suggest he left the area.

“Once all lines of inquiry are exhausted it becomes extremely difficult to know where to search next and inevitably, as times passes, our searches will scale back.

“Alastair’s family have been informed and my thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”

Officers have stressed that their missing person cases are never closed and ask anyone with information, or who finds Mr Done’s blue rucksack or blue camping mat, to contact them on 101.
