Aberdeen’s council administration has pledged to push forward with its plans to build 2,000 homes.

At tomorrow’s budget meeting it will move to award contracts for two new developments, allowing building work to begin in the coming months.

A total of 368 homes are planned for the former Summerhill Academy site on Lang Stracht, while 284 more are proposed for a vacant piece of ground near the airport.

In addition, the administration is also planning to give instructions to tender sites at Craighill, Kincorth and Tillydrone, with construction to begin early next year at the latest.

Council co-leader Jenny Laing said: “This administration made a promise to bring forward 2,000 council homes and tomorrow at the budget we will start to deliver on that.

“I understand this city requires council homes and I am proud that we will be responsible for delivering more council housing than any other administration in modern times.”

Fellow co-leader Douglas Lumsden said: “I am delighted that the we are not only using land that is own by the council, but we are also working in partnership with the private sector to deliver council homes right across the city.”

“It is important that the council works with the private sector for the benefit of everyone and I am sure those currently on the council house waiting list will be pleased to see the council building council homes in Dyce.”

SNP group housing spokeswoman Jackie Dunbar said: “The SNP had a manifesto commitment to deliver 2,500 homes in the city and, while this total is slightly less, I am fully supportive of the plans brought forward.”
