Hollywood film star tours Fittie after grabbing bite in Aberdeen takeaway

It’s not every day the toast of Hollywood pops in for a visit – but one Aberdeen takeaway was delighted when Hunger Games star Donald Sutherland wanted a grilled cheese sandwich.

The film star, more recently known for his portrayal as President Snow in the Hunger Games series, had been eager to tuck into a toastie and had tried to visit the Melt takeaway in Aberdeen on Saturday – only to find it was closed.

However, he was in luck when he turned up at the door of the Holburn Street eatery just after 3pm yesterday, although the shop was closed, manager Catriona Platten let him in and took his order.

He sat on the bench outside to eat his sandwich, even posing for pictures as he polished off the toastie he’d been so eager to try.

Melt owner Mechelle Clark was gutted to miss the actor, as she was serving her food at Stonehaven Harbour Festival.

She said: “I did not get to meet him – I was devastated about that. I was at the festival when he came in – just my luck. My manager kept his order ticket and water bottles.

“We had just closed, he had popped his head in and luckily Catriona had not switched off the grill.

“He tried to come into the shop on Saturday, but we were closed.”

Donald, father of 24 star Kiefer, ordered the “Monsieur” from the Melt menu – a mouthwatering combination of caramelised onion and three types of cheese.

His wife Francine plumped for the macaroni melt.

Their order was finished off with two bottles of water and four brownies.

Mechelle said: “I’m a huge fan of his. Don’t Look Now is one of my favourite films.”

She added: “Catriona says he was lovely, a gentleman, very charming and cool.

“His wife was great too and offered to take pictures.

“He kept eating his toastie while that was being done.”

Mechelle said it is not the first time she has missed a visit from a famous face.

She said: “Nicola Sturgeon and Jon Snow from Channel 4 came in a couple of months ago.

“Every time I have a day off, celebrities come in.

She added: “I will have to take days off more often.”
