The Press and Journal has been recognised as the UK’s best regional daily newspaper for the second year in a row at a prestigious awards ceremony.
The Voice of the North received recognition at the Newsawards event in London, with judges praising its “exemplary” mix of local and national news.
The expert panel from across the media industry described the P&J as a “superb DC Thomson title”.
And they said: “Winner for the second year running and highly commended in 2016,
this newspaper attracted plenty of plaudits.
“The P&J oozed quality, with bright colours, striking front pages and top class
supplements too – an exemplary news service provided to a vast area.”
Richard Neville, head of newspapers for DC Thomson Media, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for the Press and Journal.
“It is great to see all the hard work that goes into producing compelling newspapers printed to the highest standards being recognised.”
The P&J defeated competition from the Eastern Daily Press, The Chronicle in Newcastle, The Irish News, and The Yorkshire Post.
Its DC Thomson stablemate, the Dundee-based Courier, was highly commended.
Judges included representatives from Guardian Media Group, JPIMedia and The Independent.
Discovery Print, the contract printing arm of DC Thomson Media, won Regional Newspaper Printer of the Year prize.
Judges praised its “high quality clean printing, excellent vibrant colour printing, and superb inking”.
The winners were announced at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on Wednesday night.
The P&J printed its first copy in 1747 and is Scotland’s oldest daily newspaper.
