Record-breaking weekend for Stonehaven beer festival

Record crowds visited Stonehaven for the 10th anniversary Midsummer Beer Happening at the weekend.

More than 6,000 people flocked to the Aberdeenshire coastal town for the three-day festival of beer, food and music.

The throngs of people in the marquee in Baird Park between Thursday and Saturday helped raise £52,000 for four local causes.

Organisers had been aiming to collect around £30,000, but the amount they mustered exceeded their wildest dreams.

It takes the grand total raised by the not-for-profit festival over the last decade to £177,000.

The town’s Men’s Shed project, Sea Cadets, youth football club and Rhythm Nation dance group will all be given £10,000.

Organiser Robert Lindsay said: “These are all great organisations who make a huge difference to lives in Stonehaven for people of all ages and from all walks of life.

“We are delighted to be able to help them with their tireless work for the community.”

The additional money collected means another £5,000 will be given to the local Guide Dogs branch.

Funding will go towards training costs for Summer, the guide dog puppy, who helped open the festival on Thursday night.

Last year, the happening donated £10,000 to the same cause and Summer was named in its honour.

Mr Lindsay said he was grateful for the continued support of people for the festival.

He added: “We made some changes for our 10th anniversary, creating a marketplace atmosphere for the 120-plus beers on offer by inviting brewers to set up their own pop-up bars. Our visitors seemed to really like what we did.”

Another record was broken as 1,000 cyclists took on three challenging routes through the Mearns in the annual Cycle Sportive.

A delighted Mr Lindsay promised that the festival would only get better in the future.

He said: “In our 10th year, records have tumbled on all fronts and – more importantly – people have had the best of times while helping others.

“None of that would have been possible without the help of our hundreds of volunteers, our sponsors and, of course, the people who came along to enjoy all the beer, food and music.

“That goes for not just this year, but every year for the past decade. We can’t thank them enough.

“We thoroughly intend to keep doing that, keep getting better and cement our position as one of the biggest and best celebrations of beer, food and music in Scotland.”
