A counsellor who has devoted thousands of hours to helping vulnerable children has been nominated for a volunteering prize.

Aberdeen man George Berstan, 76, has volunteered with Childline since its city base opened more than 15 years ago.

He has clocked up an impressive 2,000 hours helping children in need of support, and is now in line for Volunteer of the Year accolade at the 2019 Celebrate Aberdeen awards.

The inspirational volunteer was nominated by the NSPCC, which runs Childline, for his commitment to volunteering and helping children in need of someone to talk to.

He said: “Hopefully this will put Childline more in the public eye and encourage volunteers to come forward and commit a little time each week to help keep young people safe.

“I have a professional background in the area as I worked as a youth worker my whole life.

“When I retired I thought my experience would be a benefit for Childline, so I applied to become a volunteer counsellor.

“Everybody at some point in their lives needs someone to speak to and Childline provides that service for young people.”

Childline manager for Aberdeen, Leanne Ferries, said: “Over the years, George has helped hundreds of young people.

“He goes above and beyond what is expected of him, and truly deserves this award.”

The Celebrate Aberdeen awards ceremony will take place at P&J Live in Aberdeen on September 14.
