Aberdeen council bosses are probing the costs of a new entrance for a city leisure centre- after a report raised concerns over the facility’s design.
Get Active at Lochside opened in December and boasts a fully equipped gym, swimming pool and two sports halls.
It is operated by arms-length council body Sport Aberdeen and is designed as a community facility to operate alongside the £47 million Lochside Academy.
But in the body’s annual report, serious issues were raised about the facility – with the report’s authors calling for further investment to bring it up to scratch.
The report reads: “Delays in reaching agreement over the operating costs associated with the community sports facilities and design issues have impacted on our ability to offer a comprehensive community leisure offer within this community.
“Without investment to alter the design of the facility to accommodate additional community use, the facility will never play a full part in meeting the leisure needs in this area.”
Now council bosses have confirmed that following a meeting last month, “modifications” to the building will be investigated.
A council spokeswoman said: “Following a meeting of Aberdeen City Council’s strategic commissioning committee, it instructed the council’s corporate landlord to obtain and then inform local members of the costs of the proposed building modifications required to create a separate entry point to the community leisure facilities at Lochside Academy.
“Representatives from Sports Aberdeen attended the meeting and are aware of the committee’s decision. They too will continue to be kept updated in relation to this issue.”
Sport Aberdeen declined to comment.
Their annual report also identified serious issues with the 1992-built Beach Leisure Centre – which is already suffering from “plant failings”, according to the document.
