A charity football match held in memory of a teenager has raised £5,700 – and counting – for the Mental Health Aberdeen charity.

The event, which was arranged by friends and family to commemorate 19-year-old Tom Smith, attracted scores of people to Spain Park in Aberdeen on Sunday to watch the proceedings.

Cameron Spence, who helped organise the event with Nicole Yeoman, was delighted at the number of people who turned up to pay their respects to his friend.

The 20-year-old said: “Everyone who helped out made the day so special, and I am sure that Tom enjoyed watching us all.”

Miss Yeoman, also 20, added: “The current total is sitting at £5,700 and I can’t begin to express how grateful we are for all the kind donations.”

A spokesman for Mental Health Aberdeen said: “We cannot stress enough how proud we are of every single person who supported the match in memory of Tom Smith.

“We are so grateful they chose Mental Health Aberdeen as the partner for this event, and we were just as grateful that we could be there to offer support on the day.”

Another charity game has been organised for north-east teenager Liam Smith, who died after he went missing last November.

That match, between friends Liam made at Elrick Primary School and Westhill Academy, will take place on November 17 at Westdyke Leisure Centre in Westhill.
