Aberdeen primary children have named the city’s 10 main road gritters – with the winning names entries including Sandy Spitter the Big Gritter and The Gritest Showman.

The other winners were Granite Gritter, Gritz’ n’ Blitz, Snowdog, Grit-mas, Spreadie Eddie, Snow Worries, Glitter Gritter and The Grittalo.

Children from Cults, Cornhill, Danestone, Kingsford, Culter, Quarryhill, Loirston, Milltimber, Braehead, and Seaton primaries were chosen to name the machines.

Due to the popularity of the competition, the judges decided several pavement gritters would also be named and they are Lightening GritQueen (Cornhill), Derek McGrittas (Glashieburn), Gritty Gritty Ice Bang (Forehill), Snowbuster (Countesswells), Gritty Gritty Bang Bang (Broomhill), Gilbert (Kirkhill), Salty (St Peter’s), The Gritinator (Kingsford).

Fernilea chose Chilly Miller, while Abbotswell pupils selected Gritney Spears.

Lord Provost Barney Crockett praised the names.

He said: “We have had a flurry of entries for schools across the city and it’s been fantastic to see how witty and funny our youngsters are.

“It’s great we’re offering the chance for people to track gritters online for the first time this winter season as they’ll be able to see for themselves which part of the city the vehicles are out at and at what times.”
