Motorcyclist suffers serious injuries after crash at notorious north-east blackspot

A motorcyclist has been seriously injured following a crash at a north-east accident blackspot.

The collision between the motorcycle and a car occurred at the notorious Toll of Birness junction, which links the A90 Ellon to Peterhead road with the A952 Fraserburgh to Mintlaw route.

The incident took place at around 6pm yesterday and the motorcyclist was taken to hospital suffering what police described as “serious, but not life-threatening injuries”.

Traffic built up around the spot as both roads were subject to restrictions in the aftermath of the crash, with rush hour commuters advised to avoid the area.

All northbound traffic was diverted a mile or so along the Mintlaw road then back onto the Peterhead route.

The Ellon to the Toll of Birness route has been the subject of intense debate for years.

In 2015, transport body Nestrans was commissioned to investigate options on how to increase commuter safety there.

Earlier this year, campaigners pushed to have improvements made to the stretch following concerns that it remained a danger to motorists.

The campaign was dealt a major blow after road bosses argued that the problem did not justify the economic investment that would be required to improve the stretch.

Flashing signs urging drivers to reduce their speed were installed last year as a way of helping to improve safety.
