Search for missing Banff man William Hay intensifies

Police in Macduff searching for missing William Hay

Police took to the streets of two north-east towns as the search to find a “well-known” missing Banff man intensified.

William Hay was last seen at about 3.10am on Sunday on Buchan Street, at the junction with High Street in Macduff.

It is thought that the 35-year-old was driving a white Smart car between Fraserburgh and Banff at around 3am or 4am that morning.

Officers located the car near Greenwood Loch Holiday Park, near Crudie, and his family have since grown increasingly worried about Mr Hay’s welfare.

In a bid to find him, more officers were tasked to search the towns and were seen in Banff and near Macduff library today.

Inspector George Cordiner said: “There will be heightened police activity in the Banff area, starting from tomorrow morning as we continue with our searches to trace William.

“Officers from the community policing team will be assisted by appropriate operational support units.

“I would also urge residents in the Banff area to check any garages, sheds or outbuildings they have in case William may have sought refuge there.”

Mr Hay is described as white, around 5ft 10in, of slim build and with a gaunt appearance.

It is thought that he could be wearing a green waterproof jacket, dark blue jeans, a red and cream checked shirt, black snood and a black Beanie hat.

Steve Beedie, the founder of Unspoken Wounds, a Facebook mental health support page, wrote online: “Known this lad for many years and he’s going through quite a lot.

“Please, if you know anything, let the police know. Or even just a wee phone call to give any help.

“His family are lovely and it’s a tough time of year.

“Wullie, if you’re online at all, just send a wee message and there’s help available.”

Banff councillor John Cox said: “He’s from a well-known family and my thoughts are with them at this distressing time.”

Anyone with information or camera footage from the area has been asked to phone 101.
