Man treated at the roadside after being struck by lorry in Aberdeen city centre

A man had to be given emergency medical treatment at the roadside yesterday after being struck by a lorry in the centre of Aberdeen.

Police and ambulance crews were sent to King Street, near to the Aberdeen Sports Village, at around 4.40pm.

Traffic ground to a halt as officers closed the road in both directions to enable paramedics to work.

Multiple police and ambulance crews were present and officers were seen speaking to potential eye-witnesses as investigations into the cause of the accident began.

Police said last night that the male casualty had been treated at the scene before being transported to hospital.

The full extent of his injuries was unclear but they are not thought to have been serious.

It is understood the driver of the vehicle was uninjured.

The accident caused considerable congestion and long tailbacks were reported on King Street.

Motorists, as well as passengers on public transport, were diverted down near-by streets.

Police also issued a warning to avoid the area to limit the extent of the congestion.

The road was re-opened at about 7.45pm.

Last night ward councillor Jim Noble urged festive revelers to take extra care on the roads, with the weather conditions and dark evenings limiting visibility.

“I am shocked to hear that someone has been struck on King Street,” he said.

“You don’t often hear of this type of thing happening.

“At that time of night the roads are always really busy with traffic.

“It is very unfortunate and I hope both the pedestrian and driver are all right.

“With these dark nights drawing in, we must remain extra vigilant.”

His sentiments were echoed by fellow councillor Michael Hutchison, who represents the George Street and Harbour area.

He said: “It is always shocking to hear about accidents like this.

“My thoughts at this time are with the pedestrian.”

There were also delays on Wellington Road, near its junction with Charleston Road North, caused by a broken down HGV.
