Inspectors find north-east primary ‘warm, nurturing and inclusive’ but rank it weak for raising achievement

Inspectors have called upon a Peterhead primary school to improve children’s attainment in literacy, English, numeracy and
mathematics.

A team of inspectors from Education Scotland and the Care Inspectorate visited Meethill Primary and Nursery in November last year.

The nursery was hailed as “warm, nurturing and inclusive” and its quality of  learning, teaching and assessment all rated “good”. There was a “satisfactory” grade for its work to secure children’s progress.

Inspectors were less impressed, however, with the primary school, grading it just “satisfactory” for learning, teaching and assessment and labelling it as weak for raising attainment and achievement.

They said: “Data provided by the school for session 2018-19 shows a minority of children achieved expected Curriculum for Excellence levels in literacy at P1 and P7 and the majority of children at P4.

“In numeracy, a minority of children achieved expected levels at P4 and P7. The majority of children achieved expected levels at P1.

“Across the school, most children could achieve more.

“Senior leaders need to raise expectations of what children are capable of achieving.”

Aberdeenshire Council has been urged to provide the school with additional support.

Inspectors will return later this year to monitor progress.
