Trio of amateur singers come together to host concert for charity

Three amateur singers are harmonising their talents to present a special concert in aid of Aberdeen’s oldest charity.

Alex Buchan, George Coghill and Gareth Masson will perform an eclectic selection of operatic and foot-tapping songs at St Machar’s Cathedral on Wednesday.

The trio are all pupils of local singing teacher and community stalwart, Kate Hughes, who tasked the three men with the challenge of performing in aid of VSA’s ongoing campaign to raise funds.

Ms Hughes has been teaching singing for many years and is highly regarded in theatrical circles.

She previously worked in close conjunction with the late Ian Adam, a renowned vocal coach who trained many famous names, including Michael Crawford when he was preparing for the demanding score of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom Of The Opera.

After coaching Mr Buchan, Mr Coghill and Mr Masson for a number of years, she was keen to give them an opportunity to highlight their vocal gifts for a great cause.

Mr Masson, 50, who is a family law solicitor in Aberdeen, said: “I have performed in local theatre productions since I was young.

“When I turned 40, I wanted to learn how to sing classically and I thought Kate would be the obvious choice.

“She teaches a lot of people and she was quite excited by our progress and what we were doing. She realised that we weren’t being heard and wanted to do something about it.

“So, with her connections we were able to organise this concert in aid of VSA.

“There’s a heavy emphasis on the operatic and musical song. Alex and I are tenors and George has this big booming voice – so it’s a nice mix.”

Mr Coghill was born in Aberdeen and grew up in Wick and Inverness and is also a tenor.

Mr Buchan, who is originally from Peterhead, has a bass singing voice and after being overheard in the car, singing along to Tom Jones and Pavarotti, was encouraged to take singing lessons.

Mr Masson added: “I’m excited at the moment, but I’m sure we will be nervous on the day itself. It’s a nice home crowd, with our friends and family in the audience. So I think it will be a nice evening.”

The concert will be held on Wednesday at 7.30pm and tickets are available at the door.
