Thousands raised as support group goes from strength to strength

A group of strangers have pulled together to create a vast support group, with flyers and posters distributed across Aberdeen in less than a week.

Aberdeen City Mutual Aid was set up by volunteers to help reach some of the city’s most vulnerable people.

The group was set up by student nurse Robyn Ward, who admitted she was “blown away” with how many people wanted to help.

The group’s posters have been put up across the city

She said: “Our services are mainly aimed at those who have been made vulnerable by the impact of isolation and those who are unable to go out and get a hold of essential items or run errands.

“The group will be offering shopping deliveries, dog walking, and general errand running.

“We are also providing friendly, emotional support over the phone to those experiencing loneliness during this isolation period.”

Yesterday, they broke the £1,000 fundraising mark on their JustGiving page.

All money raised will go toward buying food, covering fuel costs or purchasing necessary supplies for members of the community.

Miss Ward added: “The interest we have had so far from people wishing to volunteer and support us has been brilliant.

“While I am blown away by the generosity and steadfastness of our community during this time, more helpers are always needed, and most definitely welcome.

“We have a phone line, which is run by a small group, who will triage your call request to the correct area and group of volunteers.

“If you are requesting emotional support, we have a group dedicated to providing that.

“We realise this is a trying and difficult time for everyone and would like to acknowledge this by saying there is no shame in seeking a friendly voice at the end of the phone.”
