Former Aberdeen pub to be turned into flats

A former Aberdeen pub is to be converted into much-needed affordable homes.

The East Neuk bar on King Street will become two residential flats in plans backed by Grampian Housing Association.

Earlier this year, Ryden LLP lodged plans on behalf of Drumrossie Land Development Co Ltd to re-configure and turn the pub into a one-bedroom flat accessed from the rear of the property, and a three-bedroom flat, with the entrance at the front.

Victoria Anderson, development officer at Grampian Housing Association, said the new flats would “assist Aberdeen City Council to tackle the housing shortage”.

She said: “Grampian Housing Association has a strong working relationship with Drumrossie Land Development Co Ltd, having worked together to deliver many affordable homes across the Aberdeen housing market area in the last two years.

“Key to this has been identifying and developing sites in places where people want to live.

“We are committed to building upon this strong working relationship and with that in mind can confirm our commitment to the East Neuk, King Street development and ability to assist in delivering the proposed additional affordable homes.

“The additional two units help provide a mix on a development dominated by two bedroom properties.”

Aberdeen City Council approved plans for the flats this week.

Planning documents submitted by Ryden say the external appearance of the building will remain largely unchanged from the existing pub.

The East Neuk closed in 2016, and Stuart Horne, manager at the bar, blamed closure on the downturn in the oil industry over the last 12 months.

The bar had opened 111 years before , in 1905.
