Site of old bakery in Aberdeen to rise again with butteries, cakes and bread galore

An old bakery which has lain vacant for two years will rise again today when it reopens under new ownership.

The former Aitkens Bakery on Glenbervie Road, in Torry, has been revived by a native of the area who hopes to take advantage of people’s growing appetite for local produce.

Garry McAllister will run The Bread Guy bakery alongside his brother Christopher and sister Donna.

He said: “I lived in Torry when I was younger, my wife is from here and this is where my children are being brought up so what a better place to open the bakery than our home.”

While the 26-year-old said he does have “some nerves”, he believes there “is always going to be a need for a good quality bakery”.

Mr McAllister added: “We’ve done this before in Inverurie so it’s not totally new to us.

“One of our Facebook posts has had 500 shares and considering the business is new to this area, and people here maybe didn’t know us from before, it’s been met with a massively brilliant response from the locals.”

The Bread Guy Bakery will offer a variety of sweet and savory goods including donuts, pies and takeaway sandwiches.

Mr McAllister added: “The butteries will be served fresh when we open the doors at 6am. We hope people find our butteries are as good as the Aitken ones, they were always top dollar.

“Not only are our products high quality but our ingredients are also locally sourced too. We hope to do well and that people enjoy our products.”
