Police are investigating an alleged overnight lock-in at an Aberdeen nightclub.

Around 30 people are said to have been involved in the early morning drinking session at The Garage nightclub after it shut at 3am on Sunday, May 18.

Police Scotland have confirmed they are investigating a “licensing-related incident” at the Windmill Brae club.

The Garage was then closed over Friday and Saturday last weekend.

However, the club insisted yesterday the closure was not related to the investigation, but due faulty equipment.

A spokesman for the club said the venue had been shut due to a broken sound system, which was fixed on Sunday.

The bar has been open for business since the start of the week, he added.

Police inquiries are still going into the May 18 incident, but a spokeswoman confirmed last weekend’s closure was unrelated.

She added: “Police in Aberdeen can confirm that they were made aware by the management of The Garage nightclub that they had taken the decision not to trade on Friday, May 23 and Saturday May 24.

“This was the result of a decision taken voluntarily by the management of the company.”

Aberdeen City Council’s licensing board are not believed to have been notified of the alleged lock-in.

Lock-ins are when pub or club owners permit drinkers to camp out in their premises after the doors close and drink until dawn.

They were commonplace in the UK until the Licensing Act (Scotland) 2005 came into force, which determined them a licence breach.

The maximum punishment for breaking the rules is the loss of licence.
