Police at scene of fatal lorry collision that killed Karen Gillanders

A woman who saw a pedestrian being killed in a lorry accident is being sought by police.

Officers will stage a reconstruction of the smash which resulted in the death of 41-year-old Karen Gillanders on Monday.

Part of King Street will be closed on Wednesday between 10am and 11am, as investigators return to establish the exact set of circumstances surrounding the crash.

An articulated lorry will also be used for the exercise.

Charity shop volunteer Ms Gillanders, described as a “kind, caring and gentle” person by her grieving mother, died at the scene.

Several witnesses have been interviewed already, but officers are hoping to trace a woman seen close to the crash spot.

She was slim, with long, dark straight hair and was wearing a light-coloured – possibly green – dress, and carrying a dark-coloured shoulder bag as well as a white bag.

Road policing inspector Ian Kirkwood said: “We understand the female would have been walking towards the pedestrian crossing on the west pavement around the time of the collision and we are keen to speak to her to see if she saw anything or has any information.

“We would also still like to appeal to anybody else who was in the vicinity at the time the collision occurred to come forward.

“It may be a small piece of information that somebody holds, but this can be vital for our inquiries.”

Early reports from the scene suggested Ms Gillanders, who had been on her way to volunteer at the Marie Curie cancer shop in Chapel Street, stepped onto the road when she was hit by the lorry.

Her mother, Elizabeth, said after her daughter’s death: “Karen was a beloved daughter, sister, sister-in-law, auntie, niece and cousin.

“She was a kind, caring and gentle person who was always well-dressed and girly by nature.”

King Street will be closed between Regent Walk and University Road on Wednesday morning as police return to the scene.

An alternative route for northbound vehicles will be available via Linksfield Road, Golf Road and Regent Walk.
