NHS Grampian expects Monday return for pupils at coronavirus-closed Aberdeen school

Nearly 50 people have been told to self-isolate after an Aberdeen school was closed due to coronavirus- but class should return on Monday.

The headteacher of Oldmachar Academy Judith Mohamed confirmed a single detected case had forced the secondary to close today.

Last night Mrs Mohamed admitted the news was “unsettling” but said the closure was “purely precautionary”.

Health bosses have now confirmed they expected pupils to be allowed back to the Bridge Of Don school on Monday.

Test And Protect have traced 46 people who have been in close contact with the virus-positive patient, advising them to self-isolate for 14 days.

Last night a NHS Grampian spokeswoman said: “We are investigating a single detected case of COVID-19, associated with Oldmachar Academy.

“We have identified 46 close contacts to date; our Health Protection and Test And Protect teams spoke to the majority of them yesterday evening and tracing work has continued today.

“All close contacts are advised to self-isolate for 14 days.”

The health board’s new testing policy means all those in close contact have been offered a test.

But the 14-day self-isolation will not be affected by the outcome of the test, given the varied length of time the virus can take to develop.

The school was closed today to allow a deep clean, and it is hoped staff and pupils will return on Monday.

The NHS Grampian spokeswoman added: “In common with all city schools, Oldmachar Academy has in place a number of measures to limit the spread of this virus, including staggered start times, staggered breaks, designated areas for particular year groups and frequent opportunities for hand sanitising.

“The school has closed today to allow a deep clean as a precautionary measure.

“It is expected to reopen on Monday.

“We want to thank the school management team and Aberdeen City Council for their prompt and ongoing support of our investigation.”
