First glimpse at new Deeside school

These are the first images of how a new north-east primary school will look.

Work is now underway on Drumoak Primary School, marking the beginning of the end of years of overcrowding.

The school, near Banchory, has been over capacity for years, with nearly double the number of pupils it was designed for learning in cramped conditions.

The new energy-efficient building on Sunnyside Drive will have space for 145 pupils, as well as 30 in the pre-school nursery.

And as these new artist impressions show, pupils will soon have plenty of space to not only learn, but to runaround in their free time.

As well as six classrooms, the school will have a large sports hall – bringing an end to gym classes in the local church hall – and changing facilities, as well as a library and fully-equipped kitchen.

There will also be a playground and an all-weather sports pitch, which the community will also be able to use.

The £7.3million project was approved by councillors last year, and now construction firm Robertson Eastern have started the year-long works.

Councillor Isobel Davidson, chairwoman of Aberdeenshire Council’s education, learning and leisure committee, last night welcomed the news the project had finally begun.

She said: “A new primary school for Drumoak has been a high priority for this council and the education service for many years, and it’s great to see that construction is underway.

“This new school is truly a school fit for the future with excellent design to reduce heating and hot water costs, to accommodate the growing population in the village of Drumoak and the surrounding area.”

The campus will be accessed from a neighbouring 35-home development to the north of the site, currently being built by Stewart Milne.

A pupil drop-off will be created next to the school entrance, and work is already underway to widen the road and instal pedestrian crossings on the main access from the village.
