Cops on the hunt for Neep of the Week

As any schoolboy collector will tell you, filling that Panini sticker album is a serious business.

But when one grown man fled a north-east supermarket with 20 packs of World Cup cards, police were unimpressed with his commitment.

The crime in Fraserburgh prompted officers to take to Twitter to proclaim the culprit their “Neep of the Week.”

The accolade went down so well with members of the public that the north Aberdeenshire police team have decided to make it a weekly event.

Banff Sergeant Bruce Crawford, who came up with the idea, said: “Since the first Neep of the Week we have gained more than 1,500 new followers – many of whom are teenagers.

“This is the demographic we want to reach out to and show that we have a really varied job, but also that we are human after all.

“At the same time we have to be professional about it, because we are police officers, so there is a fine balance to be found.”

The second Neep was a Macduff man who called 999 to report his mobile phone stolen – despite the call being made from his mobile phone.

Last week a 39-year-old Banff man attempted to flee from police in his van – only to drive into a grassy park and get stuck. He was arrested there and then.

Yesterday’s Neep was found on Reid Street, Banff – having been released on bail minutes before, with a condition to stay away from Reid Street, Banff.

Sgt Crawford and his team have been applauded by local councillors who have praised their work in the community.

Troup member, Hamish Partridge, said: “I must congratulate Sgt Crawford for the innovative and fun way his team are engaging with the public through Twitter.

“This is a fantastic way to get instant information out to the public on both a serious note as well as highlighting some of daft things being dealt with on a daily basis.”
