Eight arrests were made before and after Aberdeen FC’s Europa League game against FC Groningen in Holland.

Last night, Aberdeen police officers described the trip to Groningen as “a very positive experience” despite a few Dons fans who “let themselves down”.

Of the eight arrests made – for offences such as disorder and other minor incidents – it was not known how many were Aberdeen fans.

Senior and football specific officers from the north-east made the journey to the Dutch city for the Europa League clash which was won by the Dons.

Aberdeen fans were targeted on a Groningen street as their procession – led by a pipe band – made their way to the team’s Euroborg stadium on Thursday evening.

However, near the city centre, a group of Dutch football fans met them and one ran forward to throw a bicycle at the musicians.

Dutch police officers had to resolve the situation, said to have involved around 200 FC Groningen supporters.

An Aberdeen FC spokesman described the incidents in Groningen as ‘a minor skirmish’, adding that it had been “an extremely successful trip on and off the pitch”.

He said: “Dutch people tried to attack our fans in the square. As far as we’re aware nobody was injured from an Aberdeen perspective.

“The police from Aberdeen were working with their Dutch colleagues, and Dutch police went about their business.

“Our fans were great in the stadium, every one of the players mentioned how much they played a part.”

Around 1,100 Aberdeen FC fans made their way to the Netherlands for the showdown on Thursday.

Chief Superintendent Adrian Watson said: “Overall it was a very positive experience in Groningen. As expected the overwhelming majority of the travelling support behaved in an exemplary fashion.

“One or two perhaps let themselves down.

“We are aware that some of the home support would have caused a few challenges and this will be thoroughly investigated by the Dutch police.”

The Dons spokesman added: “There were a few minor skirmishes which you get at every football game, apart from that nothing, an extremely successful trip on and off the pitch.

“It was a pretty quiet one from our perspective. I wasn’t aware of any Aberdeen fans being arrested. “
