Roadworks due to start in Ellon

A series of roadworks will get under way in an Aberdeenshire town today.

Several roads in Ellon will be closed over the coming fortnight as resurfacing works are carried out.

Signs advising of the closures were put in place, but earlier this week Aberdeenshire Council had to remove one after a contractor made a “major mistake” – putting the wrong date and wrong location on the sign.

Station Road and Commercial Road, two of the town’s busiest roads, will both be resurfaced during the upgrade.

But the original advance signs warned the routes would be closed from August 17 to August 8 – an error councillor Gillian Owen immediately pointed out to the authority’s roads department.

They have since been removed and replaced.

Station Road will close on Sunday for resurfacing at its junction with Bridge Street, although will then reopen until the full works get underway on Wednesday.

The route will be upgraded between Bridge Street to Union Street, and work is expected to be completed by August 15.

Works on Commercial Road will be carried out between Millwood Road and Annand Road from Monday, and although the authority initially advised the route would be closed, it has now been decided traffic lights will be put in place until next Friday instead.

From today, Western Place will be closed at its junction with Barratt Drive until Saturday while resurfacing is done. Nearby Patey Road will also be closed at the same time, between Chapelhill Road and Chievres Road.

Mrs Owen said it was “unfortunate” the wrong signs had been erected, but added: “As soon as this error was drawn to the council’s attention it has been corrected and I think now everyone should be fully aware of the roadworks timetable for the next few weeks.”

A spokeswoman for the authority said: “Signs with the correct information were erected on Tuesday to ensure local residents are notified in good time of the upcoming works.”
