Aberdeen teen joyrider back in court

Keiran Gibbon

A young joyrider who narrowly avoided being locked up after he crashed a stolen Jaguar in Aberdeen has admitted a string of new motoring offences.

Keiran Gibbon was only 15 when he led police on a late-night chase around the city after stealing a green S-type.

The youth then crashed the car before fleeing the scene on foot.

He was later banned from driving for two years and warned that if he continued to commit car crimes he would be locked up.

Yesterday, Gibbon appeared back in the dock facing six new charges.

It was alleged the 17-year-old, of 4 Abbey Square, Aberdeen, had driven a silver Subaru Impreza carelessly on August 13 this year by driving at “excessive speeds” in the dark without his lights on.

However, the teenager denied his driving was careless and instead admitted driving the car over three consecutive days while he was not insured and whilst disqualified.

This was accepted by the Crown.

Gibbon drove the Impreza on Aberdeen’s Leggart Terrace, North Anderson Drive, North Deeside Road, Links Road and Urquhart Road between August 12 and 14, while he was banned.

The ban was imposed after Gibbon stole a green Jaguar from Garthdee Drive on April 20 last year.

The teen – who could barely see over the steering wheel – took the automatic for a spin around Aberdeen with no lights on, attracting the attention of the public and police.

Gibbon was chased along King Street, Union Street and Holburn Street about 4am by numerous police officers, who had been told to look out for the car.

It was only when one of his passengers – who is understood to have mistaken the vehicle for a taxi – tried to kick the Jaguar out of gear that the vehicle came to a halt and crashed into a parked car.

Gibbon then fled the scene and was later found by police hiding beside the artificial ski slopes at Garthdee.

Yesterday Sheriff Graham Buchanan remanded Gibbon in custody while background reports are prepared before he is sentenced for his latest motoring offences.
