Scotland’s hottest day of the year was recorded in Deeside this week – with more warm weather expected.

Temperatures in Aboyne reached 24.3C on Monday, overtaking Scotland’s previous high of 23.6C in Dunstaffnage on June 5.

As the week has gone on, more areas across the north and north-east have experienced temperatures rising above 20C – accompanied by the occasional rain shower.

According to the Met Office, Grampian will have another “dry and bright day” on Thursday with sunny spells and some cloudy patches.

The maximum temperature in the region is expected to be a “very warm” 24C.

Although the day started with some drizzle in parts of the Highlands and Islands, sunny spells are forecast to break through in the afternoon – with a temperature high of 21C.

Today’s temperatures

  • Aboyne – 24C
  • Stonehaven – 22C
  • Inverness – 21C
  • Elgin – 20C
  • Aberdeen – 20C
  • Peterhead – 18C
  • Fort William – 17C
  • Kirkwall – 17C
  • Oban – 16C
  • Lerwick – 15C

Met Office spokesman, Grahame Madge, said: “Eastern Scotland has experienced several days this month where the region has seen above average temperatures. This often happens when the flow of air is coming off the Atlantic.

“The highland massif dries the air flowing over as rain is forced on the windward side. The relatively drier air coming down the eastern side is warmer and this causes temperatures to rise.”

How is the weekend looking?

In the north-east, the sunny spells will continue tomorrow but temperatures are expected to drop over the weekend.

The Met Office has said haar will be present near the coast with some “thundery downpours” in western areas moving up to the Moray Coast.

A maximum temperature of 24C is predicted in parts of Grampian and the Highlands on Friday.

There are also some “scattered showers” forecast over the weekend, including in Aboyne and Banchory, where temperatures are expected to stay between 18 and 20C.

Aberdeen will be dry with a high of 16C over the weekend, while Elgin will be slightly warmer at a maximum of 19C.

Further north, sunshine and scattered showers are forecast across the Highlands and Islands, with showers expected to become less frequent moving into next week.

Inverness will reach a high of 19C on Saturday, while Kirkwall and Lerwick will be cooler at a maximum of 17C.
