Big Country set to headline north-east New Year celebration

Hogmanay might feel like a distant memory.

But organisers of Ellon’s biggest New Year celebration have already signed up one of Scotland’s most successful rock bands for their 2015 festivities.

Big Country – famed for hits including Look Away, Wonderland and Fields of Fire – are set to bring in 2016 in style at this year’s Gig at the Brig.

In its third year, the event which takes place close to the Auld Brig, is expected to attract around 3,000 people.

Last night, organisers said they were “absolutely delighted” that the Dunfermline-born band had agreed to headline this year’s event, which again will be sponsored by Blackburn-based J M Taylor.

Big Country were massive stars throughout the Eighties, selling more than 10million albums.

They also played at Live Aid and opened for some of the biggest bands in the world, including the Rolling Stones.

In 2001, founding member Stuart Adamson committed suicide, devastating the band and their followers.

However Tony Butler, Mark Brzezicki and Bruce Watson re-united in 2007 to celebrate their 25th anniversary.

Jim Taylor, of J M Taylor, said Gig at the Brig was getting bigger and better each year.

“It is great to see an event like this thriving in the town and we are excited that such a prominent Scottish band has been secured in only the third year of Gig at the Brig,” he said.

On the night, there will also be a professional fireworks display at midnight to bring in the Bells, while the local Ellon British Legion Pipe Band will entertain with a set of traditional Scottish music.

More acts will be announced throughout the year.
