Leigh Griffiths strokes home Celtic's second goal on Sunday, from the penalty spot.

A man from Aberdeen has been charged in connection with an offensive tweet sent to Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths.

The tweet was posted following Celtic’s 4-0 win over Aberdeen on Sunday and police today confirmed they have charged a 29-year-old.

A Police Scotland statement said: “Police Scotland can confirm that a 29 year old man from Aberdeen has been charged in connection with offensive comments posted online, targeted at a Celtic Football Club player.”

Chief Inspector Murray Main added: “We will take robust action when it comes to any form of hate crime whether the comments are said in the street or online.  As we have already shown this week, we will ensure anyone committing such unacceptable offences online will face the full consequences of their actions.

“I’d ask people to remember, if it is illegal to say it on the street, it is illegal to say it online.”

A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal and the man will appear at Aberdeen Sheriff Court at a later date.

Earlier this week another man from Aberdeen was charged in connection with offensive online comments allegedly about an 11-year-old Celtic fan with Down’s Syndrome.

Meanwhile police are investigating a tweet which allegedly racially abused Aberdeen defender Shay Logan.
