An eight-year-old girl joined her dad in the kitchen of an Aberdeen restaurant after teacher strikes closed her school.

Rob Milne, the owner of Kirk View restaurant on Belmont Street, welcomed his daughter Charlotte to the kitchens on Tuesday.

The 43-year-old gave his daughter the option to either come to the restaurant or go to her grandparents after primary schools were shut due to strikes.

Mr Milne said it was a “good chance” to spend some time with her, as well as give “an insight” into the family business.

He tasked Charlotte with preparing the soup before service began, which involved peeling tatties and carrots.

The Danestone Primary pupil was also given a go on the blender to make it smooth – under the watchful eye of dad.

‘Customer feedback was very good’

Mr Milne said: “After she gave me a hand, she went and had a rest on the couch.

“Some customers did come in and get some soup. She was chuffed that they got to try it and the feedback was very good.”

The decision to take Charlotte to work at the family restaurant was met with praise after Kirk View shared some pictures on social media.

Claire Booth commented: “Love this! It’s so difficult running a business and being parents. You feel guilty taking them to work but we don’t have a choice so like you we try and get them involved. Well done.”

What’s the minimum wage for an eight-year-old?

Mr Milne, 43, lives with his wife and two daughters in Aberdeen.

He has run the restaurant for six years, but moved its premises from Union Terrace to Belmont Street in January last year.

“The only problem now is she has asked me how much she will be getting paid,” he said.

“I need to figure out how much the minimum wage is for an eight-year-old.

“But she will get something at the end of the month”.

Mr Milne says his youngest, three-year-old Abbie, also regularly helps to cook the family meal.

“She loves to come and cook with me”, he said.

“I think kids can get involved, it depends on what you are cooking but in certain aspects, they can do.”

In November, Kirk View received the Best Eatery Experience at the Aberdeen City & Shire Tourism Awards

In February, the team will be heading to Edinburgh to represent Aberdeen at the national finals.
