Volunteers sought to help the elderly

A national charity which helps isolated and lonely elderly people is appealing for new volunteers to come forward as it celebrates its golden jubilee.

The Aberdeen group of Contact the Elderly hosted a special tea party to mark the milestone.

The charity hosts monthly Sunday tea parties, supported by volunteer drivers and hosts, giving the elderly people who attend some much-needed company.

Across the UK, the charity has 570 groups and more than 7,500 volunteers.

However, it is now appealing for more volunteers to come forward.

John Gall, the charity’s group coordinator, said: “Every month I see the difference that the tea parties we hold here in Aberdeen make to local older people who are lonely and isolated.

“Friendships have formed between younger volunteers and older guests who really look forward to spending an afternoon having a tea, cake and a good chat.

“I would urge local people to support Contact the Elderly in any way they can.

“We’re in need of more volunteers and donations to help us reach more isolated older people and would appreciate any support that local people or business can give.”

The charity’s Morna O’May, added: “Our Aberdeen tea party groups are run by a wonderful group of volunteers and they are making such a huge difference to isolated, elderly people in the area.

“Ideally we would like to have these tea party groups in every town and village across the country.

“Currently we are  recruiting both volunteer drivers and hosts in the area to enable this group to help more isolated older people and also launch new groups.”
