Heavyweights, athletes, Highland dancers and pipers turned out in force today for the 85th Oldmeldrum Games today.

Thousands of spectators enjoyed an afternoon of traditional Scottish entertainment, which included a tug of war, caber tossing, shot putt and Highland dancing.

Two records were broken in the athletics, with Tony Daffrun smashing the Scottish record for the triple jump, as well Meldrum’s own best in the long jump.

The games were opened by local Commonwealth wrestling hero Vio Etko, with the massed pipe band also taking to the field.

Each of the five individual bands – Ellon, Kintore, Inverurie, Lonach and Buckie – got their own chance to shine in the arena throughout the afternoon.

And for those who preferred more modern entertainment, the Guarana Samba Drummers also played.

The crowds also enjoyed browsing the various trade stalls, fun fair and the Breakthrough Breast Cancer food fair.

Gordon Forsyth, secretary of the Oldmeldrum Sports and Highand Games committee, said: “It’s been a good day, the weather has held perfectly and it’s been a good crowd.”

The event is one of the first in the Grampian Highland Games circuit, which will move on to Aberdeen’s Hazlehead Park today.
