A rooftop garden in Aberdeen city centre was officially opened yesterday, giving shoppers and visitors a space to relax.
The green space, which includes a children’s play area, picnic area, seats and a colourful display of flowers, has been created above St Nicholas Shopping Centre.
Yesterday Lord Provost George Adam officially opened the area, and unveiled a granite plaque.
He said: “With a wonderful display of wildflowers and the addition of a children’s play area the new look roof garden will be a real attraction for all ages.
“Congratulations must go to everyone who has been involved in revitalising the garden.”
Today, a family fun day will be held in the gardens from 10am-3pm, with a variety of activities lined up, including street drumming, face painting, crafts and a visit from the Harry Potter owls.
The name for the project – carried out by partners Aberdeen Inspired, Bon Accord & St Nicholas, Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeen Greenspace, Aberdeen Forward, and Atkins and Creative Core – will also be unveiled during the event.
Nearly 50 names have been suggested by pupils across the city, with the winner will be announced and a special plaque put in place.
Bon Accord manager Craig Stevenson said: “We want the public to have a big part in the roof garden moving forward and we would be delighted to welcome everyone along tomorrow for a first look at the space.
“We want to plant the seed on how people can use the space for their own future events.
“Not every city is lucky enough to benefit from an area as accessible and aesthetically pleasing as this roof garden is now and for that I can’t thank the team and the project partners enough for giving the city something it can be proud of once again.”
