North-east engineering giant to provide free maths classes

Score Group will host the maths classes next year.
Score Group will host the maths classes next year.

A north-east engineering giant is to offer free maths tuition to a select group of secondary school pupils to inspire the next generation of engineers.

Pupils in fourth year and upwards will be eligible for the tuition which is being provided by Score Group for the fifth time in two years.

More than 50 youngsters have already benefited from the scheme, and many of the pupils who have completed the course have secured engineering apprenticeships in the area with firms including Score.

A spokesman for the international firm said: “All pupils who are in fourth year and upwards will be eligible for the tuition, which will be run by a group of volunteers who have backgrounds in both teaching and engineering.

“Real-life engineering drawings and measurement exercises will be used, allowing the group to focus specifically on the maths skills that are essential to anyone who is looking to pursue a career in engineering.”

The five week programme will be hosted in Peterhead each Saturday from February 27 to March 26. Classes will run from 9-11.30am.

Each session will help students build on the skills that are used to complete company entry aptitude tests. Attendees will be given an insight to the basic maths abilities employers seek in modern apprenticeship applicants.

The club is free to attend but there are a limited number of places available. Anyone who is interested should contact maths.club@score-group.com for more information.
