The Broadway musical  will be staged in the north-east later this month with an award-winning creative team.

A principal cast of actors from London, alongside a wealth of local talent, will join forces to present a new amateur production opening at ACT Aberdeen to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on January 27.

The musical, based on the novel Berlin Stories by Christopher Isherwood with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, is set in the seedy nightlife of the Kit Kat Klub on the eve of Hitler’s rise to power in Germany.

It made a star out of Liza Minnelli when it premiered in 1966.

Aberdonian director Derek Anderson’s production promises to transform the ACT venue in the city’s King Street into the infamous nightclub, complete with cabaret-style tables and chairs.

And the show marks the start of a new partnership between ACT Aberdeen and the producer-director team of David Adkin and Mr Anderson, whose most recent work includes the London revival of Sweeney Todd.

He said: “I am thrilled that we can present this incredible musical in Aberdeen.

“With an outstanding cast of actors and by completely transforming the theatre into the intimate nightclub setting, the audience will be thrust into the dangerous and decadent world of 1930’s Berlin.”

ACT Aberdeen’s artistic director, Paula Gibson, said: “This exciting new project will create unique opportunities for Aberdeen-based talent to perform this iconic show and raise awareness of the victims of the Nazi holocaust.

“Working with a London-based production team has been a great learning experience for us, and will be for the local cast members as they rehearse and perform with experienced theatre practitioners.

“I’m delighted to have Derek returning to his first theatrical home, and look forward to welcoming back future stars who may be starting their journeys from our community theatre stage.”
