Hopes been raised that an ambitious scheme to create new homes in a north-east village could tackle Aberdeenshire Council’s waiting list.
Castlehill Housing Association has lodged plans with the local authority to build on a vacant piece of land off Newlands Road in Mintlaw.
If approved, it is understood the development would provide new social houses for families on the council’s housing waiting list and create a new access road to service more than 1,000 people in Buchan’s largest village.
Currently, there is just one road in and out of homes already built at Newlands Road.
Last night, Jim Ingram said he expected the project would be passed without objection from his fellow councillors.
Meanwhile, Aberdeen architecture firm Norr is planning a consultation event for members of the public to air their views.
“It is very good news, as far as I’m concerned,” Mr Ingram said.
“And it’s good news for Mintlaw. Newlands Road links about 1,000 homes and there’s only one exit onto it. People have been trying for years to get a second because if there’s a serious crash or accident of any kind, those homes are liable to be land-locked.
“There’s also a big demand for housing in general, especially for social housing where the waiting lists have been increasing and increasing. I’m sure this will go some way in helping that, so it’s plus-plus for Mintlaw.
“It’s been long-awaited. I was personally worried that the land itself would be land-banked for a long time. It will take some time to complete, but it’s starting to move.”
Yesterday, representatives from Norr were not available to comment on how many homes Castlehill intended to build.
A consultation event within the next 12 weeks is expected to take place.
Following this, an application for planning permission will be submitted to Aberdeenshire Council.
