A 15-year-old boy has appeared in court after the bomb squad was called out to a business property in Aberdeen.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested and charged following the discovery of a suspicious item at the disused building in the city’s Sheddocksley area.

The explosives experts are understood to have been told to stand down shortly after they arrived in the city.

Police said no-one was in the property in Springhill Road at the time of the alleged incident, which was said to have happened at around 7:15pm on Monday.

The youngster, from the Aberdeen area, appeared at the city’s sheriff court on Wednesday facing charges of attempted housebreaking with intent to steal and culpable and reckless conduct.

He made no plea and declaration and was released on bail.

No further court appearances have been scheduled yet.

Police said that the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit from Edinburgh was requested to attend after a “small item” was found at the scene.
Firefighters and ambulance crews were also on hand.

A cordon was set up around the area on Tuesday as police carried out searches of a nearby grassy area with the help of sniffer dogs.

Investigating officers said there was no threat to the wider community and no need to evacuate any residents from their homes.
