Jacobites to battle their enemies on grounds of Deeside castle

Crathes Castle
Crathes Castle

The grounds of an ancient Aberdeenshire castle will be the scene of a fierce Scottish battle later this month.

The grandeur of the Crathes Castle estate will play host to a skirmish between the Jacobites and Redcoats from Saturday, May 21 until Sunday, May 22.

Duels, raids and fearsome fights will all be recreated for the event, which will exhibit 18th-century weaponry and warfare.

Re-enactors from the regiment of Jacobite soldier Alan Breck – who was immortalised in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Kidnapped – will set up camp on the castle’s grounds.

Visitors will be able to interact with the actors in order to learn more about Scottish history.

They will also be allowed to take part in drills with the soldiers and handle replica weapons.

Property manager at Crathes, James Henderson, said: “This is set to be an action-packed and exciting spring event, for all the family.

“We’ve got a packed programme lined up at Crathes, so we’re hoping that our 2016 season is going to be busier than ever.”

Crathes Castle – the seat of the Burnett family – was built in the 1500s, however the family has been based in the area since the 1300s when they were gifted the land by Robert the Bruce.

The event runs from 11am until 5pm. Tickets available online.
