A swimming pool in Aberdeen which was forced to close after vandals smashed its windows will reopen on Monday.

Staff at the Kincorth baths arrived at work to discover the building had been targeted overnight.

Some of the broken glass from the windows had landed in the pool – which meant it had to be completely drained.

A spokesman for Sport Aberdeen confirmed the pool would reopen on Monday and said customer safety was a priority.

He said: “Sport Aberdeen is clear that the safety of our customers and staff is of the utmost importance.

“Following the act of vandalism, we are now in the second stage of the process where the pool is being refilled, heated and treated.

“This requires nearly 70,000 litres (15,400 gallons) of water to be put back into the pool.

“This has been a considerable task.

“The pool will definitely open on Monday.

“We are grateful to customers and the community for their support.”

Police are continuing to probe the incident, during which £500 of damage was caused.

A police spokeswoman said: “Vandalism was reported at Kincorth Academy, which took place between 4pm on Tuesday, July 26 and 8am the following day.

“Inquiries are ongoing.”

Police have urged anyone with information on the incident to contact them on 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
